 \  Winter Notes...
from the desk of District X Director, Barbara Hadsell

Greetings and Happy New Year 2012!

Our District X clubs have had a very active and fun fall, highlighted by our District meeting in Vero Beach hosted by Helena Burgess Pearson and the GC of Indian River County.  Our FFGC officers were most impressed and all of our attendees had a great time.  Many thanks to our host club and to our members who reported on the many club projects supporting the goals of National Garden Club and the FL Federation.  This is what makes this district so TERRIFIC.

Blooming Tales and our District website will give you all the details on our upcoming events over the next few months.  Here is a quick summary.

Your Tropical Short Course registration needs to go in now!  It takes place Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach.  Don’t miss the top designers and speakers as well as guided tours of the Garden at lunch.  The brochure with the registration form is at the end of the Blooming Tales newsletter or on the districx.org website.  And then you may wish to attend GC of Indian River County’s Gardenfest on Feb. 4,5 in Vero.  More info in the current issue of the FL Gardener on page 13.

I look forward to this District’s accomplishments being lauded at our State Convention in May—which will only happen if your club takes the time to submit your accomplishments via a Book of Evidence.  Please do take the time to do this and start saving your photos and newspaper articles in 2012 for the next round of awards.  See our Awards Chair Melba Campbell’s report for more information.

As a reward for all your hard work—sign up for a big treat.  The Key West Tour is really happening.  The District X sponsored tour will be Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4 and includes three garden tours—The Nut and Spice Park, and private gardens in Marathon and Key West.  Details are in Blooming Tales and on the DistrictX.org web site.  Local garden tours are scheduled for March 24,25 by the GC of Stuart  and April 14 by the Wellington Garden Club.

Other educational and fun events coming your way include:  celebration of Arbor Day which is Jan. 20 in Florida—for you new snow birds.  Please plan to mention our Penny Pines project at your various Arbor Day events and your club meetings.  And we are invited by the Garden Club of Stuart to attend the dedication of a new Blue Star Marker Memorial on Jan. 18th.

To help you select your programs for next year, Donna Cobb Swift will be requesting an update on recommended programs using your experiences over the last year.  And our current Resource Directory on DistrictX.org is a great reference right now.  Flower show enthusiasts will find info in our current newsletter.

Please start watching for the most outstanding landscapes—public and private—for nominations to our District’s Landscape Design Consultants.  Emily Kane gives you the details in the Winter issue of Blooming Tales and we will honor the winners at our Spring District meeting April 20th.  “Spring Fever” will be hosted by the Boca Raton Garden Club at the Embassy Suites in Boca.

Two of our Environmental Study Schools have been completed and the third one on Land is scheduled for March 21,22 at the Pine Jog Environmental Center in West Palm Beach.  You need not have attended past schools to sign up for this one—join us please.  More info will be posted on the district web site when available.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I submit information and photographs for posting on the District X website?

Information may be submitted directly to the webmaster either in an email or an email with an attachment.  Information is for FYI purposes and should not be too lengthy. These events are usually open to members, guests, and the general public, and often provide income to the club/circle. Give specifics such as Sponsoring Club/Circle; Name of Event and brief description; Date; Time, Place (with directions if needed); Admission (if any), and contact person's phone or email address.  If the Club/Circle has their own website please advise and we will provide a link to the site as well.  Also, if Publicity or Additional information has been posted on-line ( i.e. YourHub, etc.) please provide the link to the article and we will include this as well.

Photographs should be in JPG format, no larger than 5x7 and emailed to webmaster as an attachment.  Please identify the event and individuals or particulars in each photo. Usually we try to keep number per individual club to no more than six (6) because of limited space.

Any additional questions may be sent directly to the webmaster.

Who can I contact about finding speakers for my Club/Circle meetings/programs or interesting ideas for destination day trip adventures ?

District X has a wealth of information that has been put together in a Resource Directory that has been compiled by Donna Swift of the St. Lucie West Garden Club. FYI, this was a herculean undertaking and Donna should be acknowledge and thanked for personally taking on this invaluable project. Her contact info is: DonnaCobbSwift@aol.com

NOTE:
If you have 'discovered' something new and exciting please share.
